Obituary of Shirley E Hughes

Shirley E. Hughes, 95, of Brimfield Street, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Valatie, NY on July 13, 1917, the daughter of Richard and Nina Brakefield Hughes. Shirley graduated from Clinton Central School and Utica School of Commerce, after which she was employed at Hayes Bank in Clinton for several years. She served in the United States Women's Army Corp during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. Following her military service, she attended Syracuse University and upon graduation taught 11th and 12th grade Social Studies at Unadilla, North Syracuse and Whitesboro Schools. Upon her retirement from Whitesboro in 1973, Shirley worked briefly at Hamilton College as a student liaison. Shirley was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church and the Clinton United Methodist Women. Shirley was a world traveler, having visited many countries, especially those in Central and South America and in Asia. She is survived by her nieces and nephews John and Patricia (Teasha) Hughes, Nina (Hughes) and William Owens and Mary Jane (Hughes) and William Towns, all of Clinton, and Daniel Hughes of Utica; several grand nephews, grand nieces and cousins, including special cousins Margaret Davies and Sue and Tom Levesque; special friends Mark and Carol Klausner, Dick and Jean Williams, and Rhoda and Shirley Swan. She was predeceased by her brother, Arthur "Bud" Hughes who passed away in 1997 and her sister-in-law Vivian B. Hughes who passed away in 2006. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Clinton United Methodist Church, Utica Road, Clinton. Burial with military honors will be at Green Lawn Cemetery, New Hartford. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements by Owens-Pavlot-Rogers Funeral Service, Inc., Clinton.
