As a newly hired young engineering GE in Utica, Bill would periodically call to see how everything was going for you. In particular Bill would always inquire whether or not you were in a relationship, got engaged, got married, bought a house, etc. The engineers who answered yes to any of those inquiries would find that their raises would become smaller each year, while the engineers we answered no to all of those questions would continue to get bigger raises than those who answered yes. I wonder if this was the facet of Bill's work that he was most proud of saving GE some money?
